The desktop file already contains a list of mime-types. As an example
the file gnumeric.desktop already contains the string "excel". I
reported this bug, but it turned out to be a duplicate.

As far as I xcan see the freedesktop.org standard does not allow you to
add metadata such as "calendar", "schedule" or "appointment" or "date"
to a desktop file. Perhaps this feature requires higher politics.
