The long term goal is to have a similar feature set to the current GNOME
Panel clock (intlclock)

Both *should* be available in the overlay - but its easy to do for the
Calendar (which is implemented in Clutter) and hard to do for the user
drop menu (which is a standard GTK+ menu)

Well, it's more of a Mutter issue than a GTK+ issue. There's a patch to
allow themes to truly center window titles sitting there that I need to
go ahead and finish applying:
