Re: Reasoning behind panel re-implementation



Keep in mind that the GNOME2 panel actually uses a legacy programming
interface to embed the applets into it, called Bonobo.

This API has been phased out in a lot of GNOME programs, and they're
really trying to stop people from using it, since there are other
better ways to create a plugin-interface.

So most of the existing panel applets would have to be rewritten
anyway, since the old panel's Bonobo is going away no matter what,
even if GNOME Shell was never made.
