Hi,

     When talking about the 'Open with' context menu for files (in Gnome), I think its somewhat restrictive in its current avatar. I have lots of JPEG files in various folder. But they all open with the same application when I click them (EoG).

Thats not fine with me. I want to open the JPEG files in my Holidays foler always open with gthumb and I want all JPEG images in my 'work' folder open with GIMP.

I think its only fair to expect these things.

So we should be given an option to open all JPEG file in a particular folder open with the application we specify. All the file types in all folder should be customizable like that. Its frustrating to open the application first and then importing the folder to view a few images.

Of course, this is out of purview of Gnome-shell. But if Gnome-shell is going places things like these should be taken into account. But this has some relation to my previous posts.

   yes it would be fine if we could make a new definition of what we look for. But thats what i meant by adding "custom" tabs. to add file extension of our choice. I n the attachment in my previous mail you can see that filter tabs for time and size are there (proposed). This should be helpful.

also it would be fine if the "Recent Files" list can highlight the files with different colours according to the application it is associated with (open with context menu default).

Or it would be even better it it highlights the files according to the actual application they are actually opened with. So that we can easily differentiate between the files which use different programs or those associated with different activity.

For an example those image files opened with scanner program can be highlighted in blue and those opened with html image generator with yellow.

Hope this makes some sense. We need more ideas both good and bad to make things better at gnome.

Would it be possible to define customized tabs that could be added or removed as pleased?
The tab would then have as many items as we want it to be.Sort of like the smart folder of MAC.
If I have pictures php css files that i have to access quickly because I'm working on a web project, I could make a new definition of what I look for.
This could include items of type css php jpg and png not older than one week (or a specific date, the day I started my project).


Since the space to have tabs is limited, it could be possible to load a tab definition in order to switch from one view to another quickly. Sort of like a playlist in your favorite media player.It might be possible to stack tabs on 2 rows.

Always for the example, I have two different activities: scanning,
archiving and preparing my photos on one hand and creating my gallery on
the other hand; both activities are associated with image files. But
when I am scanning and archiving, it can take a long time (one day for
one roll). If I have several rolls, I will first scan and archive and at
the end I will prepare my photos. But it can take several weeks.
Meanwhile, I can create one gallery from previous rolls. So if I have
one tab with all my recent image files, I will have a mix from two
activities. If I can have a choice for items organized by activities, I
will be able to get the right recent items associated to the right
activity.
