You speak about the overlay as being something new. This is something
KDE has had implemented for quite a long time. Not only that, but you
can customize which corner of the screen (or side of the screen) is the
"active spot" to activate the overlay when prompted by the mouse
movement. We don't need to have a KDE vs Gnome discussion, seeing as
though the beautiful thing about Linux is the ability to choose. But I
think it's important to note that some of the features I'm seeing in
Shell are already existent elsewhere.
I like Gnome Shell a lot, but it's not practical to use on a production
system. I'm one of those extremely click happy quick typing power users
who just needs to get things done. Ever open a couple applications at a
time on Gnome Shell? It makes me dizzy. Overlay every single time?
Really? I love the design of it, but I don't think the overlay should
need to be activated to do every-single-thing on the system. It may work
out well for some users, and that's great. Use what suits you. But at
the end of the day, it just didn't suit me.

It's actually more useful to someone with only one workspace because
they tend to have even more overlapping windows.
It only needs one click to switch windows anyway. The top left corner
is a big target you can do a very approximate gesture to trigger the
zoom without clicking.
After a while it becomes second nature and I was surprised that it
feels very old fashioned to go back to a flat desktop.
Try Docky if you find the transition uncomfortable but it only takes a
few weeks.

Hey all.
I've been watching GNOME Shell for a while, but there is one problem that I
really can't see being resolved.
How useful is this to someone who uses one desktop? Just one? Never-mind the
other one, or three, or four...
Why should I, the user, have to perform three extra clicks just to do what
it takes me one to do now?
There has been less video/photo material to consume then I could safely make
a judgement on, and if the 'one desktop' problem has been addressed and
solved, I apologize for taking up your time.
