I went through exactly what our install script does, cleaning out root's 
~/.gconf/schemas which had gpm's there, also sending the -HUP to gconfd 
processes: GPM now seems to work ok. :)

I'll see if my original issues are still present, in which case I'll 
start a new thread or open a bug.
