Yes. Does this work:
dbus-send --system --print-reply
--dest=org.freedesktop.Hal /org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/computer
org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.SystemPowerManagement.Hibernate
Unfortunately, the output probably is not very helpful. Here it is:
frafu UbuntuDesktop:~$ dbus-send --system --print-reply
--dest=org.freedesktop.Hal /org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/computer
org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.SystemPowerManagement.Hibernate
Error org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.UnknownError: An unknown error occured

I wonder whether it is not related to the error messages that I get
and that tell me that the dbus could not be initialised.
