What version of gnome-pilot are you using? I don't think your console
output included the version message...
Sounds like:

If you are running gnome-pilot 2.0.14 you may be able to verify if that
is the problem by stopping hald before starting gpilotd and seeing if
that fixes the problem.
Upgrade to gnome-pilot 2.0.15 if possible, or if you have gnome-pilot
compiled against pilot-link 0.12 you can try setting up libusb
syncing:
