There are patches available for the memo_file bug.  See message to this

As they have still not been incorporated into any official releases (or the
source repository), you'll have to check out the sources from CVS 
(http://cvs.gnome.org/lxr/source/gnome-pilot/), apply the patches and
recompile gnome-pilot from the sources.

You say you're a newbie, so you mightn't feel like doing all that.  If 
you're running redhat I have a source RPM available which should do the
job for you (packaged against redhat 9).
