If Jonathan is running debian/woody, there are fine backport packages
out there which seem to have the fixes included, sources.list should
include:

deb
http://ftp.acc.umu.se/mirror/mirrors.evilgeniuses.org.uk/debian/backports/woody gnome2.2/

deb-src
http://ftp.acc.umu.se/mirror/mirrors.evilgeniuses.org.uk/debian/backports/woody gnome2.2/

giving 
gnome-pilot:

as the available version.
