initial sync chrash with debian unstable and gnome-pilot

Hi
I am usiing debian unstable with kernel 2.4.22. gnome- pilot
2.0.10-2
pilot-link .11.8-7
typing gpilotd gives me the following
gpilotd-Message: gnome-pilot 2.0.10 starting...
gpilotd-Message: compiled for pilot-link version 0.11.8
gpilotd-Message: compiled with [VFS] [USB] [IrDA] [Network]

(gpilotd:2522): gpilotd-WARNING **: Number of pilots is
configured to 0
gpilotd-Message: Activating CORBA server
gpilotd-Message: bonobo_activation_active_server_register =
0
gpilotd-Message: Watching Cradle (/dev/pilot)

I can sync with jpilot and kpilot

when I enter
 gpilotd-control-applet
Iget the following
** Message: No pilot userid/username information located
** Message: Unable to load pilot id/username, assuming unset
** Message: No pilot cradle information located
** Message: Unable to load pilot cradle info, assuming unset
gpilotd-Message: Activating object OAFIID:GNOME_Pilot_Daemon
** Message: No pilot userid/username information located
** Message: Unable to load pilot id/username, assuming unset
** Message: No pilot cradle information located
** Message: Unable to load pilot cradle info, assuming unset
** Message: No pilot userid/username information located
** Message: Unable to load pilot id/username, assuming unset
** Message: No pilot cradle information located
** Message: Unable to load pilot cradle info, assuming unset
Then I pick /dev/pilot
usb
etc and next and when I put the palm in the cradle and sync
for the first
time
I get an error message saying gpilotd has crashed
and the following message in console when I close every
thing

Any help would be appreciated
I have tried varying speeds and /dev/ttyUSB1
(i have a palm m515) although either should work because
they do with jpilot
and kpilot
