Sounds like you didn't configure the Palm in gpilotd-control-applet.
You definately don't need gnome-control-center running to sync your Palm.
Are you sure gpilotd is running? You're not logged into GNOME as root, are
you?

This sounds like a known kernel issue. Are you sure you are running
the Linux kernel version 2.4.21 or later? I've had this exact problem on my
Thinkpad, when I was testing the earlier Treo support on early Linux
kernels. 2.4.20 with the rollup patch fixed it, and it was rolled into
2.4.21. Try upgrading your kernel.
Sync'ing a Treo to Evolution definately does work, for quite a few
people who have fixed/figured it out. Your issues sound like
misconfigurations of some sort.
