We have a wealth of possibilities here.  The trick will be
integrating them.

DIA - for structured drawing seems pretty close to esher
SodiPodi - SVG seems like a nice open format for  the future
Sketch   - dunno never used it.
 
For obvious reasons Pango seems the only choice for text rendering.
