I don't think there really is too much wrong with the current gtop.
The main problems with the current gtop is that the default shows
too much information and changing the configuration doesn't save
the state.
Here's a picture of the current gtop that is simple

I changed the mode to toplevel, only showed user processes and got
rid of some fields that were either useless (to me) or redundant.
Maybe a complete rewrite is unecessary, since the current gtop is so
configurable maybe the solution would be to have better defaults, and
to save state.
