How does the gnome network tools fit in together?

Hey,

I was having a look at the network tools' source code in Gnome:
network-manager-applet network-manager-openvpn

I wonder how does all these fit together. I mean the network applet in gnome-shell, network-manager-applet, etc.

Can some one help me understand the broader picture?
