I think you messed up with the configuration of the terminal, since
it's wrong it nicely crash without to say nothing (one of the nicest
things of the GUI), since the user is supposed to know nothing.
As a remedy to see some error messages one could start gnome-terminal from the command line:
- Start a xterm and see what gnome-terminal says when started from there.
- Alternatively open emacs, get a shell ([ALT]-x shell) and start it from there.
