Not necessarily, I run debian but I use grub as bootloader...
Also on debian if you want to boot into X most of the time but want to
close down X occasionally you can simply log out of X, use CTRL+ALT+Fx
to go to a console and then type /etc/init.d/gdm stop to shut down X.
(Assuming off course you're running GDM and not XDM or KDM, but since
this is the gnome mailing list I believe that to be a safe assumption in
this case.)
