After doing this, I get to a screen which has a grey background, a X for a 
pointer on the mouse, and the blue/grey logo with the Red Hat logo, 
"redhat" and "Red Hat Linux".  Nothing else on screen.  Mouse moves around, 
but can't select or do anything.

Checking the home directory afterwards, it now contains the following 
directories (which have been created):
        .gconf
        .gconfd
        .gnome
        .gnome2
        .gnome2_private

.xsession-errors is still emtpy, and the XFree86 log file doesn't contain 
any errors.

So looks like GNOME is crashing then due to the driver or something?
