Well, you need Nautilus 2.3.2 for this. The comment I was replying to
was made of that Nautilus version.
As discussed in the Nautilus-list, the desktop handling code was changed
for Nautilus 2.3.2. The comment about not having physical files for home
and trash refered to this version.

Personally I encourage you to update. There are a few cool new features
in Nautilus since they branched 2.3 series. And haven't had any problems
with it.
