Unsolveable Mystery

Hello all,

Fist off, I'm not sure if this is the appropriate place to post this so let me know if I'm OT.

I've had a problem with an error that I cant seem to fix. When I start many of the Gnome2 applications, I get the following errors

The first dialog is:
GConf error:
  Configuration server couldn't be contacted:
 CORBA error: IDL:omg.org/CORBA/BAD_OPERATION:1.0
All further errors shown only on terminal

And the second is:
An error occurred while loading or saving configuration information for Nautilus. Some of your configuration settings may not work properly.
(With the details)
Configuration server couldn't be contacted:
 CORBA error: IDL:omg.org/CORBA/BAD_OPERATION:1.0
Configuration server couldn't be contacted:
 CORBA error: IDL:omg.org/CORBA/BAD_OPERATION:1.0
Configuration server couldn't be contacted:
 CORBA error: IDL:omg.org/CORBA/BAD_OPERATION:1.0
Configuration server couldn't be contacted:
 CORBA error: IDL:omg.org/CORBA/BAD_OPERATION:1.0

This only happens when to my user on the system. I created a new user and ran gnome-session and all was fine. I ran as root and all was fine. I removed all the .gnome* .gconf* etc. directories, started Gnome again and it still happened.

This is gnome 2.0.2 running on Gentoo Linux 1.2. I've tried searching for a couple weeks now but everytime I see someone posting this particular error, they get no response or unusable information.

If someone has had this error, please inform me as to how you fixed it. While I dont use Gnome, I use the applications and it's really a drag.

Thanks in advance!
