You probably already tried this, but just in case you didn't...
Did you try to bring up the window manager (Sawfish, fvwm, or
whichever one you're using) menu by clicking on the root screen?
I've had a similar problem in that Gnome goes totally unresponsive
upon logout -- but I've been able to start an xterm via the wm menu
and kill gnome-session.
