gedit not working

gedit (and other editors have stopped working. When I try to open an existing file gedit reports that the 'file does not exist, do I waish to created it?',  However I can use the built in viewer in GMC to view the file. Pico and Nano will open the text files but the contents is garbage. Any Ideas?
