gnome-terminal not working

I just installed a fresh copy of Slackerware 8.0 and
am having a bit of trouble with the gnome-terminal.
When I use gdm to log onto the system, I can not use
the gnome-terminal program. Whenever I try to start
gnome-terminal the screen flashes for a split second
and then closes. I get the same result every time I
try to start gnome-terminal. This does NOT happen when
I log in as root through gdm, or if I do not use gdm
to log in. Any help or suggestions on how to trouble
shoot this would be great.
