Thank you very much!

This makes perfect sense and I tried it and so far it fixed problem.

Of course it was sporadic before so I'll be more sure it worked
as time goes on.

What do you think about adding a line to rc.local to scrub
the /tmp directory at every reboot??? That should provide nice
insurance for this.

What would cause these /tmp files to get mangled??? My desktop
PC never had this problem.. only this new laptop?!?!?!
