Hi
Daniel.
I'm
glad you pointed that out. I've been starting to compile all the stuff myself,
then I stopped and thought (maybe after the 6th or 7th package out of
60) what the hell am I doing here? There's better things to do than wasting my
time with unfinished things. I want to have something that doesn't mess up the
whole system. I'm feeling a bit stupid that I've also started to delete some
"old" Gnome 1.4 packages - oh my god, that was naive.
... I
wrote a lot of horrible thoughts down here - about Linux in general, spare time
programmers, desktops - but I don't really care and deleted everything
...
Thanks
for your help, Daniel. I think we might have to wait on the next RedHat
distribution.
Best
regards,
Roland.

Unfortunately, no. I have tried the Gnome2 channel but
it's really just snapshot versions and very prone to being screwed up in some
way or another. So I have aborted the use of that until they present
official 2.x Gnome packages. Don't know how long it will take, but I'm
with you for wanting to stay with RPM as much as possible. Although, if
you on occasion like to experience a challenge mentally, try tracking down
dependencies and stuff after you have used --force indiscriminately. :)
I have definitely learned a lot through those
experiences. I've had Gnome break on me many times but now I'm starting
to get a feel for it's innards. Imagine crashing the system in some way
and then not having Nautilus come up? I had no idea why my wallpaper
didn't come back. Or imagine running "gmc" while Nautilus is active and
they're both trying to be the desktop manager? Oh the fun I
had...

Subject: Binary RPM packages for
RedHat 7.3
Hi.
I'm really
confused and have to apologize for my small knowledge about different
package formats that already might cover my needs.
I'm wondering if
there are any binary packages of the Gnome2 release for RedHat 7.3 available
for download. I already tried the standard source distribution, but it's
more than horrible to build it on your own.
I can't wait to
see the release version of Gnome2 running, so please
help.
Many thanks in
advance.
Best
regards,
Roland.
