If your thinking of building gnome2 I would recommend Garnome (http://www.gnome.org/~jdub/garnome/). That is a build script that compiles everything for you in the right order (I used it myself on redhat 7.3 after I gave up compiling from source myself). This makes it easy to install it without interfering with your normal desktop, since you can install garnome in your home directory (or somewhere else you can write to). Its recommended to install it as your normal user and not as root.

If you really want rpms you can try gnomehide (ftp://people.redhat.com/hp/gnomehide/) or ximian snapshots (http://primates.ximian.com/~jacob/gnome-2-snapshots/)but these will afaik replace your old gnome.
