Problem with installation

Hi i'm new of the list.
I've got a problem with the installation of gnome-core1.4.0.4

I use Debian Gnu/Linux 2.2.19 with a Debian version of Gnome (is a old
version).
I want install all in /usr/local for not overwrite the Dedian's Gnome.
I've got a problem with "gdk_pixbuf".
I'm installed "gdk_pixbuf 0.11.0" on /usr/local/lib (i've
"/usr/local/lib" in ld.so.conf) and i type ldconfig.

When i launch "configure" on Gnome-core, don't finds the library
gdk_pixbuf and ther'isnt a opzion on configure to indicate the location
of gdk_pixbuf like, for example, for gnome-libs (--with-gnome-libs).

Someone can help me ??
