I can run the esd daemon and beeps come through the speaker so I suppose
esd is OK but no sounds come out of gnome. I tried recompiling the basic
gnome libraries and programs with the working esound, but that did not
help.

That's too bad as extace looks cool. I might even try ALSA just so I
can make that work.
