Gnome and OSS/Free

Does gnome work at all with OSS/Free?

I can listen to CDs and so forth with OSS/Free on
my system, but gnome sound and apps like extace
do not work.

It seems like I remember older versions of
gnome working with OSS but the later versions
seem to have been broken somehow.
