lack of fonts

A few days ago I upgraded to XFree86 4.0.2. The next time I started a
gnome application, it was missing all of it's normal text-- the menus
didn't have any labels, no text inside the menus, etc, although they run
fine other than that. The X and KDE based programs I use were
unaffected by this...
Any ideas what's wrong?
