what is happening is that your XF86Config (if you use
X 3.3.6) or XF86Config-4 (if you use X4.0.x, x=1-3
depending on your installation)is not quite OK. Both
files should be in /etc/X11/ (in some cases there is
one in root which is only used when root uses X).
First you should try to see if you can get the right
resolution by doing <Ctrl><Alt> + (resp -= to increase
(resp decrease) resolution.
** NOTE ** the + (resp -)must be the one on the
numeric pad!!!
If this does not work, check which X version you have
and hack the corresponding XF86Config (resp.
XF86Config-4) file.
removing the virtual screen should solve the problem
of a 1024x768 screen on a 800x600 resolution.
as to getting the 1024x768 a brute force solution
would be to go to the Section screen and removing all
resolutions but 1024x768 in the Modes lines....
