changes don't save

Hello,
 I am using Ximian gnome 1.4 beta with redhat 7.0. For some reason when
II make changes to my desktop they are not saved when i log back in.
Fore instance I have to add icons for glimmer, evolution and mozilla to
the bottom panel everytime I log on. I did a chown and chmod to make
sure that I had permission to write everything in my home dir but that
still did not work. How can I figure out where the changes are saved to?
And does anyone have any idea why this might hapen?
