Question re: gnome/gtk and graphics cards

I have a wierd query -be patient
 have RH6 to 7 installed on 3 machines all running X4.01
one has a s3 trio card and the other two have ati rage pro cards
In general use there is no appreciable difference in graphics.
However I have noticed that when using using mozilla/galeon there is a
major speed differnce in favour of S3 and in seems to be purely in
loading images.
Does anyone know whether it is purely a X issue or whether a particular
lb is affected by differences in the cards
