RE: gmc

Isn't this where much of our desktop capability comes from (i.e.: DnD, the
panel, device links, etc.)?

Just like Windoze (my dusty copy of Windoze always ran Explorer even with
the graphical file mangler front-end closed).  If you still have Windoze,
try Ctrl-Alt-Delete and look at the running processes - Explorer is always
running as the desktop, kill it and Windoze barfs.  :-) heh, heh it barfs
lots anyway even if you don't do this :-)

Try it with gmc and you're pretty much okay because at least the window
manager is still running.

So perhaps it is safe to say that you can't have DnD without this type of
process running in the background.  If I'm totally off base, please correct
me.

I find it very disturbing that gmc runs just to have

I'm sure most users don't realize gmc is running since
it doesn't show up in the task list.

How much memory does gmc use?
