problem with Compaq laptop in linux env

hi folks, 

I am new to Linux env, i am trying to install linux Red hat 6.1 from CD
onto a Compaq laptop LTE 5400, After a lot of reading i heard about xfree86 and
then used Xconfigurator to setup Xserver in there, now even if i choose my
monitor as LCD 800x600 i can't set the resolution to 800x600 in either 8 or 16
bit mode, resulting in 640x480 resolution which mak es everything so samll that
i can only see part of the win in there and the rest hidden. Can somebody who
has either encountered this prob or has an intelligent sol to it solve this for
me
