Thanks for the info, Ian.

I had seen the "--crapplet" option and tried changing it back to --capplet
with no effect.  Obviously from what you say and this experience, it's not
the option that matters.  Oh well.

Maybe I can grab an older version of Xscreensaver from Potato (it worked
"back then")...
