gnome-lib 1.0.16, rpm from tar

Under RedHat 5.2 with rpm-2.5.5-5.2 I cannot create rpm's from
gnome-libs-1.0.16.tar.gz

1-
rpm -ta gnome-libs-1.0.16.tar.gz
gives
line 12: Tag takes single token only: Release: %?CUSTOM_RELEASE
%!?CUSTOM_RELEASE:%RELEASE

2-
after hacking gnome-lib.spec and rebuiding with
rpm -ba gnome-lib.spec
I got
--lines 1 to 2380 of logfile cutted----
Executing: %doc
+ umask 022
+ cd /usr/src/redhat/BUILD
+ cd gnome-libs-1.0.16
+ DOCDIR=/var/tmp/gnome-libs-root/usr/doc/gnome-libs-devel-1.0.16
+ export DOCDIR
+ rm -rf /var/tmp/gnome-libs-root/usr/doc/gnome-libs-devel-1.0.16
+ /bin/mkdir -p /var/tmp/gnome-libs-root/usr/doc/gnome-libs-devel-1.0.16
+ cp -pr devel-docs /var/tmp/gnome-libs-root/usr/doc/gnome-libs-devel-1.0.16
+ exit 0
Finding provides...
Finding requires...
Requires: gnome-libs /bin/sh

and then rpm aborts.

Any clue?
Or any suggestion of FAQ, or the lik,e where I get familiar with these
procedures?
Thanks.
