I'm not sure about the criteria nor your background, but a suggestion
could be to look into "GUI design towards the end user" This would be
more theoretical and perhaps involve more of a literature study,
but could profit projects like Gnome very much. Helping to make a
desktop not only for the newbie but also for the experienced
user. That is, a design that don't just lower the threshold for getting
started, but at the same time ensures user friendliness when one past
the starting stage. Most systems has one of the two. And those
considered "user friendly" has only the prior.
