Xmodmap problems?

Hi,

I'm trying to switch to GNOME as my default dsktop and I'm
experiencing a few problems with national (Polish) characters input.
I've installed ISO-8859-2 fonts and chose them in a couple of
applications (gnome-terminal, gxedit, gnotepad+), using also an old
Xmodmap file that used to work for me for years. The result was that
the terminal worked OK (full 8-bit input/output), while I couldn't
write Polish characters in the editors (KDE's kedit worked all
right). I tried the gkb applet with the Xmodmap option (BTW, why are
the flag pixmaps so large? They spoil my vertical corner panel), and
thet helped, but at the same time the keys stopped working for the
terminal... What am I doing wrong?
