Correct me if Im wrong Dr Geek, but doesn't your idea involve 'sliding'
from point A to point B?  Not just getting a fresh desktop when you hit the
edge?  I envision a fluid movement with no defined desktop area... points
in 3D space could hold links, menus, etc.  As commented earlier, gravity
could be lightly introduced to influence the users orientation, keeping
them oriented correctly.
