Install simplification

Is anyone working on the simplification of the GNOME install? Has anyone
considered writing a setup program, packing all the needed progs into a
single dat file, and then publishing diffs when updates are written?
(Just rerun the setup prog and select "apply diff"). It seems that a ton
of effort has been expended on making the interface easy enough for any
Joe to use (to great success), but little has been expended on
installation. It's a cop-out to depend on the different distributions to
get it right. I don't have the expertise to embark on such a project,
but if I can plant a little seed...
