mingetty and gdm

Further on my last post:

Interestingly enough i can do a ctrl-alt-f1 and still login as root
though i cannot see anything on the screen, but telnetting in from
another machine i DO see root's bash session.

Any ideas how to reset the consoles or restore the video to them?
