mingetty and gdm

I am playing with GDM and trying to get the MAC on our LAN to connect to
it, which it does quite nicely. However, for some reason gdm died, and i
seemed to have lost all my virtual consoles (f1-f8). Is there any way to
get these back without rebooting? i killed each /sbin/mingetty and they
all came back but i cant seem to get the monitor connected to the server
to RECOGNIZE them except for tty7 which is using gdm....any ideas?
