I'm not sure if you saw the thread, but I'm starting work on a project
that sounds a lot like what you're desribing.  Basically nothing that
doesn't deal with managing windows will be supported, left instead to
Gnome to handle.

I'm not quite in the coding phase of things yet, but I have had a few
people who want to work on the project with me, and I'm hashing out some
design specs with the team working on Gnomifying wm2.
