This really isn't something Gnome should do. It's not the task of a
desktop environment. And it doesn't provide any functionality in my
book.

It would be much more useful to show the command executed in some
status line and then, subsequently, any output the application
produces. I suppose this could be implemented as a panel applet...
"Startup Monitor" or such.
