I can see how this could irritate.  You might try running XF86Setup in
the meantime (I asume you are using XFree86 on Redaht 5.2).  This
program is slightly more useful than XConfigurator in configuring the
mouse.  It allows you to select different mouse configurations and test
them and you can recover using keystrokes if it bombs your mouse.  Read
the keystroke bindings at the beginning before moving forward.
