Re: sounds in Gnome



Another option to turning off esd (esdctl off) is to start esd as
follows:

esd -as 2 -nobeeps &

Then:

esdctl unlock

This has worked for me, both in freeing the dsp device for other users
and processes, as well as allowing other non-esd aware apps to access
the dsp device through esd.

I am probably way-off in the technical decription of this solution.  I
would like someone to better describe why this works and what it does,
if they can.
