this is certainly not the case.
EDITOR is set to /usr/bin/gnuclient, emacs is invoked.

BTW, on bugs in gmc:

mouse3 on a file -> view -> view window: I can only close it through the
window manager: no keys, no mouse, no scroll bar - nothing works.
