You should be exec'ing gnome-session. When it fist starts up there will be
no window manager, run the gnome configuration utility, go to the Window
Manager section and set it to WindowMaker. It should start atomagicaly.
Next time you start, WindowMaker will start up properly.
Make sure when you want to log out, you do it through the panel.
