I had similar problems. The following e-mail snippet may help. Once
gnome-session runs OK then you use to control-center to switch your window
manager to Window Maker.

There is a bug in the latest gnome-core. It installs default.session in
$(prefix)/share, but gnome-session expects to find it in
$(prefix)/share/gnome. Copying the file accross to the correct location
will also fix the problem. The bug should be fixed in the next tarball
release.
